Position Overview
As an engineering lab technician, you will be responsible for providing technical support and assistance to the engineering team in developing, testing, and validating HVAC/R systems, components, and new/existing product lines. Your role will be to set up, execute all test related activities in the lab, operate, maintain, and calibrate various laboratory equipment, instruments, and tools, and to carry out experiments and tests according to established procedures and protocols. You will be expected to document and report experimental data, troubleshoot equipment issues, and collaborate with other team members to ensure successful task completion.
Technical Responsibilities of the Job
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment, instruments, and tools such as HVAC/R systems, data acquisition systems, temperature and humidity sensors, pressure gauges, flow meters, and air handling units.
- Set up test facility, and instrumentation in response to general instructions.
- Preparation of new testing samples, including construction, installation, start-up, operation, and modification to equipment in support of engineering and laboratory testing.
- Perform experiments and tests on HVAC/R systems and components, including measuring and recording system performance, analyzing test results, and reporting findings to the Product and Lab Managers.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues, identify root causes of problems, and propose solutions to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Collaborate with the Product and Lab Managers to design and implement experiments, identify potential areas of improvement, and evaluate the effectiveness of proposed solutions.
- Maintain detailed testing notes, records, and log sheets to meet various testing standards.
- Prepare test reports on in-progress and completed tests.
- Provide feedback to engineering on design performance and recommend improvements based on test results.
- Maintain laboratory facilities appearance and functionality.
- Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling License.
- General mechanical skills and ability to read mechanical drawings
- Proficient in brazing, system reclaiming/recovery, refrigerant charging, piping and wiring skills.
- 1-2 years HVAC/R Lab Technician experience preferred.
- Field experience on HVAC equipment service preferred
- Strong understanding of refrigeration principles and diagnostics.
- HVAC/R principles, plumbing principles, Electrical principles, and electromechanical principles preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, the ability to work in a team environment, and familiarity with computer software (e.g., MS Office).
- Ability to use basic hand tools, read charts and graphs, and ability and willingness to learn new tasks.
- Lift and carry components, tools, or other items weighing more than 35 pounds. Any item over 35 pounds, is to be done with assistance
- Pull and push up to 100 pounds.
- May perform combination of physical movements to reach areas difficult to access including bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, twisting and rotation motions using head/neck, arms, wrists, waist, knees and arms while performing duties.
- Handle small hand tools and power tools. Handling may be done unilaterally (one-handed) or bilaterally (two-handed) depending on size and shape of object and task being performed.
- Ability to wear designated personal protective equipment for the work assignment (i.e. safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, hearing protection, harnesses, hard hats)
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
